Brazil: 500 guns collected in two weeks during national disarmament campaign

In Brazil, IANSA member Viva Rio collected more than 500 guns in just two weeks as part of a national campaign for voluntary disarmament. The campaign was launched on 23 May with an event in São Paulo where 4000 guns collected in previous disarmament campaigns were publicly destroyed. The event was attended by a number of officials including the Minister of Justice, José Eduardo Cardozo, Superintendent of the Federal Police of São Paulo, Dr. Roberto Ciciliati Troncon Filho, and the mayor of São Paulo, Gilberto Kassab. Viva Rio is documenting the types and origins of the weapons collected, and publishing regular profiles here. Find out more about the campaign here.
