Somalia: Hotel attack kills 35, including 8 MPs

At least 35 people including 8 Members of Parliament were killed when insurgents stormed a hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia on 24 August. The attack followed heavy fighting between the al-Shabab Islamist militia, and transitional government troops backed by the African Union. Although the transitional government signed The Nairobi Protocol for the prevention, control and reduction of SALW in the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa in 2005, the disarmament of militias and gangs remains a key challenge to its implementation.
