Brazil: Women use community radio to promote disarmament and talk about sexual violence

In Complexo do Alemao, a cluster of favelas outside Rio de Janeiro, women are using a new community radio station to talk about sexual violence and promote disarmament and a culture of peace. 'Radio Mulher' began broadcasting on 2 July, and is run by Mulheres da Paz, a local women’s project, with support from local government and other institutions in the city. The area is particularly affected by drug-related gang conflicts and the station will focus on reaching out to youths to prevent them from joining gangs. One of the women said "No one wants to live surrounded by guns and seeing their kids left without any option but to pick up a gun". The station broadcasts in the Complexo and surrounding areas on 98.7 FM.
