Cyprus: Explosion at munitions storage site kills 13, destroys power station

In Cyprus, 13 people were killed, including the Head of the Navy, and the island’s biggest power station was destroyed when 98 containers of ammunition and explosives blew up at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base on 11 July. The containers originated in Iran and were seized by Cypriot authorities in 2009 as they were shipped to Syria in contravention of a UN arms embargo. The explosions were caused by a wildfire in the area, according to media. Explosions at munitions sites have been reported in almost a third of UN Member States since 1998, according to a recent publication by the Small Arms Survey. It includes recommendations on practical measures that can be implemented to reduce the likelihood of explosions.
