The Bahamas: Police seize 212 illegal guns so far this year

Police in the Bahamas have confiscated 212 illegal guns over the first six months of this year, bringing the total number of illegal firearms seized in the last 5 years up to 1,423. The Minister of National Security, Orville A. Turnquest, said the wide availability of guns contributes to crime and violence on the islands. 49 out of 68 homicides so far this year in the Bahamas were committed with illegal guns. On 6 July, the Organisation of American States (OAS) donated a firearms marking machine to the government of the Bahamas to help improve controls against gun trafficking. They also provided a computer to facilitate the process of maintaining data on the marked firearms. 18 National Security Ministry staff will receive training on how to use the equipment.
