IANSA Women’s Network issue statement to CEDAW

On 18 July 2011, the IANSA Women’s Network joined with other organisations to submit a written statement to the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), during the General Discussion on Women in Conflict and Post-conflict Situations held at the UN in New York. The statement makes several recommendations to the CEDAW committee, including that it should pay more attention to “the regulation of possession, sale, trade and criminal use of legal and illicit small arms and light weapons… [as] … their proliferation increases the threat of violence against women in the home as well as forced marriage, kidnapping and links to organised crime including human and narcotic trafficking in conflict and postconflict situations”.
