Turkey: IANSA member pushes for changes to draft gun law

The Umut Foundation, an IANSA member in Turkey, is critical of a proposed new gun law that will soon be discussed in Parliament. If approved, it will lower the age limit to 18 for owning pump action hunting rifles and will allow individuals to possess up to five guns and carry two at any time. Nazire Dedeman of the Umut Foundation said "Some 4,500 people on average lose their lives to gun fire in our country every year. If you include the victims' families, the lives of at least 25,000 people are negatively affected". The group proposes several changes to the law, including a ban on advertisements for the sale of guns, raising the age limit for gun ownership, restricting gun licenses for people with criminal backgrounds, and banning guns in venues that serve alcohol and host public celebrations.
