Colombia: Stray bullets kill one person per week

Stray bullets have killed on average one person every week in Colombia since 1990, according to IANSA member Centro de Recursos para el Análisis de Conflictos (CERAC). In a new study, prepared with support from the Small Arms Survey and the University of Geneva, they find that this type of violence is increasing, with 700 deaths documented in the last 10 years. About 35% of the victims were children and minors.  The authors said, “This violence is easily preventable. Action is needed at national and local levels to strengthen controls on the carrying and possession of firearms, and raise awareness among civilians and law enforcement personnel that a firearm is always dangerous, even in the hands of an expert”.
