Finland: Gunman murders five

Six people, including the gunman, were killed in Espoo, Finland, on 31 December 2009, leading to calls for reform of Finnish gun laws.  The killer reportedly murdered his ex-girlfriend with a knife, before shooting three men and a woman dead from the second floor of a shopping mall. He then committed suicide. Finnish Interior Minister Anne Holmlund said new legislation would tighten rules on gun storage, to reduce the risk of weapons being stolen during burglaries. An illegal handgun was used in Espoo. Laura Lodenius of the Peace Union of Finland called for greater protection for women living under the threat of violence, citing Swedish laws as a better model. Finland has seen a number of shooting massacres in recent years. More
