Jordan: Campaigning success - first conviction on celebratory shooting

Madaba For Supporting Development, IANSA member in Jordan, reports that for the first time national legislation on the use of small arms has been applied to a case of celebratory shooting. In January a man was sentenced to 5 years in prison for firing his gun in the air during a wedding celebration, injuring one person. Ali Al-Zenat said, “This is a welcome result of all of our efforts to influence legislation on the use of small arms in Jordan”. The practice of firing bullets into the air during celebrations is common in many parts of the world. Every year many are killed or injured as bullets come back down with deadly force. In recent weeks the media has reported deaths from such shootings in Thailand, Italy, Colombia and the US. More
