Belgium: GRIP calls for reform on arms export licensing

The Group for Research and Information on Peace and Security (GRIP) is calling for “deep and fast” reform of the process for arms export licensing in the Walloon region of Belgium . In June 2009 the Walloon Government granted an export licence for 2000 FN 303 anti-riot guns to Libya. In a statement, GRIP said, “reform, together with a more rigorous interpretation of the criteria of the EU Common Position on arms exports, should lead to a more careful arms export policy with regard to the countries which do not present sufficient guarantees of stability and democracy”.
